Hiring Process #

Training Overview #

Police Officers are given rigorous training to ensure they meet the standards expected by the community.

Training is done by a joint of theory and practical.

Stage 1

Officers will cover an introduction, basics of police work, foundations and laws.

Stage 2

Officers will be assigned a mentor and given on the job training while riding along with another officer at all times.

Stage 3

Officers will handle tasks with little to no assistance with a mentor available.

Code of Ethics #

Victoria Police employees are expected to commit to the highest ethical standards, as espoused in the code of ethics:

I uphold the right in my role within Victoria Police by acting impartially, with integrity and by providing service excellence to everyone.

Arrest Rights #

Police officers must read out your rights before they interview you.

Police may interview you as a possible suspect about the offence they have arrested you for.

If an officer intends to question or interrogate the suspect while they are in custody, they must caution them, failure to do so may result in any statements made after being taken into custody inadmissible in court.

Any statements or evidence gathered before the individual was taken into custody may still be used in court.

Typical Caution

I must inform you that you do not have to say or do anything but anything you say or do may be given in evidence.

I must also inform you of the following rights.

You may communicate with or attempt to communicate with a friend or a relative to inform that person of your whereabouts.

You may communicate with or attempt to communicate with a legal practitioner.

This caution does not prevent questions of identification such as name, address, date of birth, which are still required to be provided by law.

Use of Force #

Police officers follow what is known as a use of force continuum. The force must be proportionate and will typically be in response to how a situation is.

The typical use of force model is:
